The healthcare industry is viewed as the driving force behind the future development of industrialized countries. Many questions need to be answered. Examples include: What is the significance of individual sectors of the healthcare industry from a macroeconomic perspective? Which models and theoretical concepts from economic theory and policy can be adapted? How can national healthcare economies be compared?
Can we speak of the economic dividend of the healthcare industry (share of gross domestic product, exports, intermediate consumption, and employment, etc.) and compare this with the health dividend? This increasingly requires health impact assessment and new and improved instruments for measuring the efficiency and productivity of the healthcare industry.
How is the healthcare system developing in the area of ​​new technologies, process innovations and with the support of communication and information technology (e-health)?
An important focus of the committee's work is the economic evaluation of e-health. For this purpose, the committee 2024 recommended the further development of the „Roadmap for the economic analysis of e-health applications V 2.0" The roadmap is currently being further developed within working groups within the committee. Furthermore, the committee's work has resulted in two edited volumes on e-health economics.: Müller-Mielitz & Lux (2017): E-Health-Economics and Lux, Köberlein-Neu & Müller-Mielitz (2022): E-Health Economics II - Evaluation and Implementation. A third edited volume is currently under preparation.
